The Giants and their star receiver, Odell Beckham Jr., have entered into long term contract discussions.  The deal could set a new standard in contracts for the position.

Via ESPN:

The talks are a promising sign for the two sides in hopes of having something finalized before the season opener on Sept. 9 at MetLife Stadium against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“Depends on how reasonable they are,” Mara said Wednesday on the “Morning Show with Boomer and Gio.”

Beckham was dreaming big last summer when he declared a desire to be the highest-paid player in football. The more realistic benchmarks for a wide receiver are Antonio Brown’s $17 million per year and Mike Evans’ $55 million in total guarantees.

If you’re a Giants fan who wants OBJ to remain with the team due to his on the field production, then this is good news.  If you aren’t a fan of his, mainly due to his off the field antics, then this is not what you want to hear.

The Giants are smart to get him signed before the season.  Because if the Giants offense takes off this season, as expected, OBJ will probably be a large part of the that.

That would mean a few more dollars the Giants would have to fork out.  Can’t have that.
