The Golden State Warriors are hiring Frank Vogel as the associate head coach, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Vogel will work under Steve Kerr and replace Terry Stotts, who left after a two-year run with the Warriors. Vogel is expected to step into a primary role in defensive game-planning, Charania adds.
The 53-year-old spent last season as an assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks. He has 12 years of head-coaching experience with the Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, and Phoenix Suns.
Vogel was the head coach for the Lakers when they secured the NBA title during the 2019-20 campaign. He holds a 480-422 career record and led the Suns to a 49-33 mark in 2023-24 in his most recent head coaching stint.
Golden State is reportedly in the running to sign free-agent forward LeBron James, who played under Vogel for three years in Los Angeles.
The Warriors are coming off a 37-45 season, missing the playoffs for just the fourth time during Kerr’s 12-year run as head coach.
