One of the most culturally important events of the year, this year’s Met Gala theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” The theme confused many, causing fans to question how to exactly define “camp.” Most took it to mean something along the lines of flamboyant, extravagant, larger-than-life, etc.

Celebrity guests showcased their own unique interpretation of the theme through their wardrobe choices, and the athletes in attendance did not shy away! Here are some of our favorites ranked.

Serena Williams was our favorite athlete on the Met Gala’s pink carpet this year. Williams, a co-chair for the event alongside other household names such as Lady Gaga and Harry Styles, wowed fans with this custom Atelier Versace gown. From the exaggerated shoulders to the long train ornamented with beautiful leaves, this was not a piece to miss.

Williams also wore matching bright neon Nikes, going for both the glam and the comfort that evening. Husband Alexis Ohanian came alongside in a white and black tuxedo, a neutral complement to his wife’s theme-fitting ensemble.

Williams recently congratulated best friend Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, on the birth of the royal baby – Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

Alex Rodriguez

Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez had to make this list! J.Lo, being one of Hollywood’s most consistent glam girls, wowed with her sexy silver Versace ensemble. A-Rod came alongside her in a dusty pink Versace tux. J.Lo’s dress was designed by Versace’s late Luigi Massi, Donatella’s “right-hand man” according to Lopez. Lopez was seen crying the day of the gala due to Massi’s recent passing.

Despite the tragic news, the couple have much to celebrate. A-Rod’s proposal to Lopez happened in March while they were on vacation in the Bahamas. In an interview on The Tonight Show, A-Rod disclosed that he practiced the proposal with his assistant three different times before mustering up the courage to finally pop the question. He even wore his 2009 World Series ring for the occasion. Click to watch A-Rod discuss the details with Jimmy Fallon.

Maria Sharapova

Yet another tennis star on the list! Maria Sharapova showed up in a delicate Givenchy dress. Boyfriend Alexander Gilkes matched in a simple black and white tuxedo, which seemed to be the standard for men that evening.

Sharapova’s dress featured a myriad of different textures, including sequins and beads in the top, pleats in the upper portion of the skirt and tulle in the lower half of the skirt. Some have criticized this choice as not being “campy’ enough, but the play of contrasting textures certainly brought a sense of elegance to the rather over-the-top affair.

Tom Brady

Tom Brady teased fans on Twitter prior to the gala by posting a black and white photo of his tuxedo. In the caption, he asked fans to guess which color he chose to wear that night.

The New England Patriots champ is known for coordinating his clothing choices with his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen. They’ve been seen together on the Met’s pink carpet for the past 10 years, and this year was no different! Bundchen wore a lovely pink Dior gown while Brady complemented it with a deep maroon tuxedo. According to Bundchen, her dress was made “sustainably” by a team of designers at Dior.

Was it camp? Not sure. Did they look amazing? Definitely!

Colin Kaepernick

Former 49ers quarterback and Social Justice icon, Colin Kaepernick, was also in attendance at this year’s Met Gala. He arrived with girlfriend Nessa Diab. The Kaepernick/Diab duo also decided to wear coordinating outfits.

According to our contact at CANADIANGENTLEMAN, the couple wore a custom Pyer Moss ensemble. While Diab was decked out in all gold, Kaepernick opted for a black suit with gold accents. He also wore four gold rings to really top off the look!
