After plunking Bryce Harper in the foot with a fastball, Blue Jays pitcher Trent Thornton said his phone has been blowing up but it was completely unintentional.

There were numerous “death” references in the comments, revealing the ugly side of the social media platform, and the ugly side of fans.

Check them out below:

Harper took a 96 mph fastball from Thornton in the right ankle and went down on the ground in obvious pain.

He exited the game and was taken for X-rays.

Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said that Harper has a right foot contusion.

“We are confident he is going to be alright. Not overly concerned right now,” Kapler said.

It’s ridiculous to think Thornton threw at Harper on purpose. The 25-year-old right-hander, who pitched in Triple-A for the Astros last season, is trying to make the Blue Jays roster.

“Crap. You know, I didn’t mean to do that,” Thornton said after the game (via Philly.com). “It’s spring training. Everybody’s shaking all the rust off, and stuff. Look at my seasons. I typically don’t hit many guys.”

Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo defended his young pitcher.

“I can see how people get upset, of course,” Montoyo told reporters after the game. “He’s a star. The kid’s not going to hit him, for sure. There’s no reason to. There’s no history.

“There’s no nothing. Hopefully those people that are sending (Thornton) messages stop because it wasn’t on purpose at all and everybody knows it.”

Luckily for Thornton, Bryce will be Okay.
