The St. Louis Cardinals traded flamethrowing reliever Jordan Hicks to the Toronto Blue Jays for right-handers Adam Kloffenstein and Sem Robberse, the team announced.
Hicks, 26, is authoring a 3.67 ERA and 3.02 FIP across 41 2/3 innings in 40 appearances this year, notching eight saves. He is eligible to hit free agency this winter.
Hicks is the second reliever to join the Blue Jays from the Cardinals in the past few days, as Toronto recently added lefty Genesis Cabrera after he was designated for assignment.
Both Kloffenstein and Robberse had been stationed at Double-A New Hampshire. Kloffenstein, 22, owns a 3.24 ERA over 17 starts, while Robberse, 21, has a 4.06 ERA in 18 starts. Robberse was the No. 7 prospect in the Jays’ system, according to MLB Pipeline.
The move comes one day after the Blue Jays placed closer Jordan Romano on the 15-day injured list with lower back inflammation.
Hicks broke into the majors during the 2018-19 campaign, featuring a power sinker that still averages 101 mph. In his first two seasons, he posted a 3.47 ERA and 3.60 FIP over 106 1/3 frames.
After opting out of the 2020 pandemic-shortened campaign, Hicks struggled over the following two seasons with 4.92 ERA and 4.17 FIP in 71 1/3 innings. He’s in the midst of a bounce-back year, though, posting a career-best 31.2% strikeout rate.
The Blue Jays designated right-hander Mitch White for assignment to make room for Hicks on the active roster.
