Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale had to miss a start in the ALCS after he was hospitalized due to an illness.  On Saturday, he blamed the illness on a belly-button ring.

Via New York Post:

“I had irritation from a belly-button ring, just constantly taking it in and out, causing irritation and got a rash down there,” Sale told reporters at Fenway Park, according to the Boston Herald. “Had to take care of that. Doctors and nurses over at MGH were awesome. Things happen. You handle them and keep moving forward.”

Despite the fact that Sale was able to deliver this statement with a straight face, it turns out he was trolling the media.  An unnamed teammate revealed that Sale joking.

“He told me he was going to say that,” the player, who chose to remain anonymous, said. “But I didn’t believe him.”

Belly-button ring irritation or not, Sale will be the Red Sox starting pitcher for Game 1 of the World Series.
