Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is slated to undergo surgery Wednesday afternoon after being diagnosed with acute appendicitis, the team announced, per Yahoo Sports’ Jori Epstein.

McCarthy, who was taken for further evaluation after experiencing abdominal pain Wednesday morning, is still expected to coach Sunday night’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Dallas’ coordinators will organize practice until McCarthy is able to rejoin the team.

The 60-year-old coach has the Cowboys off to another strong start in 2023. His club is 9-3 and ranks first in scoring offense with an average of 32.3 points per game, while his defense is fourth in points allowed.

Sunday night’s prime-time matchup against the 10-2 Eagles is pivotal, as the winner will take first place in the NFC East.
