New England Patriots wide receiver Josh Gordon surprised fans Thursday morning with a message indicating that he would be “stepping away from the football field.”

“I take my mental health very seriously at this point to ensure I remain able to perform at the highest level,” he wrote, in part. “I have recently felt like I could have a better grasp on things mentally.”
Just minutes later, NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero tweeted that Gordon was facing a suspension for violating the substance abuse policy.
