The expanding market for online casino applications for the mobile phone market could undergo a seismic shift. According to a new report, half of the smartphones on the market today use the Android operating system. Until recently, much of the software development efforts for online gambling have focused on Apple’s iPhone platform.

The report showed that four of the top five selling smartphones used the Android system, while the iPhone fell to sixth place. Over the past year, Android-based smartphones have caught up with Apple’s previous dominance in the market. Online mobile casino Australia software developers, who had previously concentrated on programming games for the iPhone, have had to change their strategies.

A major test for Android sports betting app will come later this month. American Wagering, Inc., has released an app that will allow Nevada residents to bet on sporting events by using their Android smartphones. The app is undergoing testing and verification by the Nevada Gaming Control Board but should be ready in time for the “March Madness” college basketball tournament later this month.

In addition to the shift in operating systems, the platforms that customers choose to access the games have also changed. Many online casino players are choosing the convenience of browser-based games, often powered by the Adobe Flash software engine, over apps that must be downloaded to the phone’s computer.

The growth of tablet computers, such as the Motorola XOOM and the Apple iPad, could also signal a change in online gambling applications. The tablets have more processing power, larger screens and better graphics capabilities than most mobile phones, which could lead to advances in presentation and game speed.
