With pitchers and catchers set to report to Spring Training in less than a month, the two biggest free agents remain unsigned. Both Manny Machado and Bryce Harper have had talks with several known teams.
The Yankees, White Sox, Phillies and Nationals have all been involved in talks with one or both of them. Since those initial talks with the known teams, there have been reports of mystery teams reaching out.
One of those teams has been identified as the Padres, who have reached out to Machado and Harper among others.
Not sure if it qualifies them for “Mystery Team” status, but the Padres have checked in w/ Machado, Moustakas, Marwin and yes, Harper. Their plan is to shoot for 2020, and no word yet they’ve made offers to any of the 4, but they could move up the timetable with one big buy.

San Diego did land Eric Hosmer and have a ton of young talent. If you’re looking to be the star player on a team and maintain a relatively low profile in the process the Padres might be a good fit.
Did I mention they play in San Diego?
