San Francisco 49ers star pass-rusher Nick Bosa is set to become the NFL’s highest-paid defender after agreeing to terms on a five-year, $170-million extension, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The 25-year-old, who’d been holding out in an effort to reach a new contract, will reportedly get $122.5 million guaranteed. He also lands the biggest contract ever given to a non-quarterback with an annual average salary of $34 million, surpassing the three-year, $95-million extension Aaron Donald signed in June 2022.

Bosa was entering the final year of his rookie contract, which would’ve paid out $17.8 million in 2023, per Spotrac.

The Niners are expected to waive all the fines that Bosa incurred during his holdout, which lasted through training camp and the preseason, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The star pass-rusher is expected to rejoin the team soon with its season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers slated for Sunday.

“He’d have to have a beer belly and be out of shape,” Shanahan said when asked if it’s possible Bosa won’t play versus Pittsburgh, according to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.

Bosa becomes the latest 49ers standout to earn a lucrative extension over the past few offseasons, following George Kittle, Fred Warner, and Deebo Samuel.

The 6-foot-4, 266-pound Bosa blossomed into one the league’s most prolific pass-rushers during 2022. He led the league with 18.5 sacks while also piling up 51 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles to earn a first-team All-Pro nod. Bosa was also named to his third Pro Bowl.

San Francisco selected Bosa with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 draft. In his first season, he recorded 47 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and nine sacks and was named Defensive Rookie of the Year. The 49ers star rebounded from a torn ACL suffered during 2020 to pick up 21 TFLs and 15.5 sacks in 2021.
