Match fixing and the scandals have become a part of the sports, ever since the players found different means to associate themselves with the gamblers. Today, there is more money that is being wagered on sports through internet. The gambling have found success in every field of sports and play also it is exploiting the spirits of professional sports with many players involving in match fixing and csgo betting. However, taking players as the medium , the gambling groups have found success infiltrating the biggest and biggest of sports in the worlds. 

Here is a list of few notorious and most blatant match-fixing scandals of the biggest sports. 

  • The Black Sox scandal

Chicago White Sox intentionally lost 1919 World Series is among the most controversial scandals in the history of America. The eight White Sox players were paid by the gamblers like James “Sporty” Sullivan.  After one year of investigation, Joe Jackson and Eddie Cicotte, the players of White Sox team confessed to their roles in the scandal. The main reason for behind the match fixing was that they were underpaid by the team owner Charles Comiskey. All the eight players were banned for life from baseball but have managed to avoid the jail. The team since then became known as the “Black Sox”.

  • The World Cup Scandal

The biggest match fixing  of all the time in the World Cup history. Germany required a victory to advance after getting defeated by Algeria. Algeria won its final match against Chile, but Germany’s win could bounce them from the World Cup in favor of Austria. Germany attacked furiously from the start and bagged a goal soon. Later, both the teams played a stifling brand of stalemate football and no more goals were produced. The Algeria Football Association protested, but was all vain. Although in future competitions the final matches of group stage fixtures were played simultaneously. 

  • The Nigeria scandal                        

The Nigerian took the match fixing to the extreme and the Football Association handed down several lifetime bans. The Nigeria Football scandal involved Plateau United Feeders and Police Machine. Victories of both the teams were questioned won with big numbers and the majority of goals being scored in second half. After the investigation, all the four teams and the match officials were given lifetime bans. 

  • The Totonero Scandal

The Italian soccer is notorious for corruption since the Totonero scandal in 1980. The scandal involved more than 30 Series A and Series B players who accepted bribes from the Roman businessmen Cruciano and Trinca. They were behind the exploitation of underground bookmaking in Italy. Few players were banned or two years and returned in time winning the 1982 Worldcup in spain. 

  • The Indian Premier League Cricket Match Fixing

 Cricket has always been into the controversy, and Indian Premier League added itself in the spot fixing scandal list after Rajasthan Royals’s three players were involved in the scandal in 2013. The three royal players, Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan, and Ajit Chandila were accused of being majorly involved in the scandal and were arrested by the Delhi Police. The trio were believed to be under the influence of gambling associate. But then Sreesanth and Chavan were released due to lack of evidence and many others were avoided the punishment because of lack of coordination in investigation. 

  • The Olympique Marseille Match Fixing

Olympique de Marseille had a fresh off winning in 1993 UEFA Champions League. It was their fourth consecutive triumph but was all undone with the charges of bribe. The Valenciennes players approached by a Marseille official, Bernard Tapie  and threw an offer for their upcoming match. Marseille were eventually relegated to Second Division and Bernard was ousted after the investigations had the financial irregularities revealed. 

With the list continuing including various other sports scandals, there are a lot other scandals to be named under the notorious match fixing scandals, but these were among the most blatant scandals ever carried out. However, the number of scandals in sports are reducing because of the measures the sports associations are taking and the life ban policy is said to make a large impact on the cause.
