Jason Collins, the first openly gay athlete to play in the NBA, tested positive for the novel coronavirus after a trip to New York City in early March.

Collins believed he was infected during his trip to participate in the Brooklyn Nets’ fourth annual LGBTQ Pride game March 4. “I had my first symptoms on Wed Mar 11,” he tweeted. “Terrible headache. A few days later I had a fever and then the cough.”

New York City has become the nation’s latest covid-19 hotspot and, in the days since Utah’s Rudy Gobert tested positive and the NBA suspended play, a number of players, from the Nets’ Kevin Durant and three of his teammates to Gobert’s teammate Donovan Mitchell, have tested positive.
