It’s that time of year again.  It’s July 1st, also known as Bobby Bonilla day!  The New York Mets will shell out another $1.19 million dollars to Bobby Bonilla, as they have done since 2011 and will continue to do until 2035.

For those of you not familiar with the Mets brilliant plan to buyout Bonilla before the 2000 season, here’s the brief history.  The Mets suck.

Here’s a little bit more info, if you need more than the simple Mets sucking version.  Bonilla was approaching the last year of a terrible contract that would have paid him $5.9 million in 2000, they chose to buy him out.

In doing so, the two sides agreed that Bonilla wouldn’t receive any money upfront, instead they would pay him $1.19 million on July 1st from 2011 to 2035.  Thus the birth of Bobby Bonilla day and an annual, off the field reminder, of how much the Mets suck.

Pop the champagne Bobby, another hard earned million plus in the bank.
