Real Madrid and Mallorca will clash in one of the games on match day 36 in the Spanish La Liga.

As of the time of writing, Real Madrid are second on the log, and they have picked up 72 points from 33 games, while Mallorca have garnered 44 points from the same number of matches and are placed 9th on the log.

Real Madrid, who are the defending champions of this competition, faced some difficulties in the early stages of the season. Los Blancos lost scandalously to Barcelona in the El Clásico at their own backyard, and they drew three games early on. Overall, it has been a turbulent season for Real Madrid, who have fallen short on many fronts this term. Carlo Ancelotti’s men have already lost to Barcelona in the Super Cup final and recently in the Copa Del Rey final too.

In Europe, they lost to Lille and AC Milan to put their qualification to the next round in jeopardy, but they recovered well to claim a place in the playoffs stage. They faced Manchester City and took them apart before battling past Atletico Madrid in the next stage. However, their run in the competition came to an end at the hands of Arsenal in the quarter-finals stage, who soundly beat them 5-1 on aggregate, including a 2-1 win at the Bernabeu.

Since those defeats to Arsenal, Madrid have struggled but managed to take three consecutive wins in the La Liga. They have been playing catch-up to Barcelona, who have opened a four-point lead at the top of the log with four games to go at the time of writing.

“We have competed and we will also compete at Barcelona in the upcoming LaLiga game. We will compete like we did tonight,” Ancelotti said after the Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona.

“We have to keep competing for the league title. We played a level game and were very close to lifting the cup. I’m hurt for not being able to lift the cup, but I have nothing to reproach my players because we played the game we had to play.”

Meanwhile, Mallorca and Jagoba Arrasate finished in 15th place last season, but they have made big strides this term already. The Pirates held defending champions Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw in their season opener. Rodrygo scored for the capital club before Vedat Muriqi rescued a point for the hosts. In the second game of the season, Mallorca fell to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Osasuna. It was another draw at home against Sevilla as Mallorca remained winless in their opening three La Liga games of the season.

However, things changed for good after that poor start when Mallorca secured five wins in their next seven La Liga games of the season. The side first defeated Leganes away from home to get their maiden win of the season, courtesy of Daniel Rodriguez’s goal. The Pirates then went ahead to lose 2-1 at home to Villarreal before three consecutive wins steered them back into mid-table. Mallorca defeated Real Sociedad 1-0 at home, then went ahead to defeat Real Betis and Real Valladolid 2-1 away from home. That winning streak came to an end after a loss to Espanyol, but the side returned to winning ways with a 1-0 win over Rayo.

At the moment, Mallorca have won just one of the past five matches, but their goalscoring conversion rate has improved compared to last season. Without any doubt, it has been a solid season for them, and they are now closing in on a mid-table finish.

Real Madrid are wounded lions after losing two titles to Barcelona already. They have the EL Clásico before this game, and that might determine the approach to this particular fixture. Well, considering that Los Blancos have won the past eight La Liga meetings against them at home, they should be able to grind out a win at least.

Mallorca are safe for another season in the top flight, but they have a great chance of playing in Europe next campaign if they can grab some fantastic results in the final weeks of the season.

Real Madrid and Mallorca have met 34 times since 2003. Real Madrid have won 23 times, Mallorca have won 8 times, and the remaining 3 meetings have ended in stalemates.

Lineups

Real Madrid do have their injury issues with the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao (out of season), and Dani Carvajal (out of season). With the shortage of CBs, Asencio is expected to continue at the heart of the backline, while Vinicius and Mbappe will be expected to lead the attack with support from Bellingham and Valverde from the midfield.

Real Madrid XI: Courtois; Vazquez; Asencio, Alaba, Mendy; Valverde, Tchouameni, Ceballos; Bellingham; Vinicius, Mbappe.

Manu Morlanes, Vedat Muriqi, Robert Navarro, and Takuma Asano remain major doubts, having missed out in recent games. However, some could recover before the trip to the capital. However, Cyle Larin and Dani Rodriguez should still be available to offer some threat in attack.

Mallorca XI: Greif; Maffeo, Valjent, Raillo, Copete, Mojica; D Rodriguez, S Costa, Darder; Larin, A Sanchez.

Prediction

Real Madrid are in a straight fight for the La Liga title. It is the only realistic title for them this term, however, they still need Barcelona to drop points to claim it. So, this is a game of importance with respect to the outcome of the El Clásico. Getting the Real Madrid tickets early is advisable.

Meanwhile, Mallorca may be keen to clinch one of the European competition slots, and a performance to that effect will be on the minds of the players. They held Los Blancos to a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture, and who says they cannot do it again?

However, Real Madrid’s dominance in the head-to-head should be able to propel them to another home win.
